Information you include voluntarily
Please do not place confidential, legally privileged, financial, medical or similarly sensitive information in a general enquiry unless it is necessary and we have specifically asked for it. If you include information about another person, you should have an appropriate basis to provide it.
How and why we use information
We use personal information for the following purposes:
Reader communication
To receive, route and respond to questions, corrections, feedback and collaboration requests.
Publication operations
To manage editorial workflows, assess proposals, maintain the Sociology Hub and improve navigation.
Newsletter delivery
To send requested publication updates and maintain subscription or suppression records.
Security and reliability
To prevent spam, abuse and attacks; diagnose errors; maintain backups; and protect the website.
Basic measurement
To understand aggregate readership and article popularity without building advertising profiles.
Legal and governance needs
To keep records, enforce site terms, protect rights and comply with lawful obligations.
Legal grounds where applicable
Where laws such as the EU or UK GDPR apply, processing may rely on one or more of the following grounds: your consent; steps requested before entering an agreement; performance of an agreement; compliance with a legal obligation; or our legitimate interests in operating a secure, useful editorial publication, provided those interests are not overridden by your rights.
When we rely on consent, you may withdraw it at any time. Withdrawal does not affect processing that was lawful before withdrawal.
Contact forms and correspondence
The contact page uses Contact Form 7. When you submit the form, the name, email, enquiry type, subject, message and consent confirmation you enter are transmitted to contact@sociologydaily.com. Standard delivery and security metadata may also be processed by WordPress, the web server, anti-spam services and the email-delivery system.
Contact Form 7 is currently used to send the submission as email. We do not intentionally keep a separate WordPress database copy unless a form-storage extension such as Flamingo, a hosting backup or another logging tool is enabled. Email copies and replies may remain in the authorised Sociology Daily mailbox.
Contact information is used to answer the enquiry, keep a reasonable record of the conversation, protect against abuse and follow up on matters you requested. It is not automatically added to a marketing list.
Newsletter subscriptions
If newsletter signup is enabled and you subscribe, we process your email address, subscription status and related consent or delivery records to send the requested publication. The signup form may transmit this information directly to the newsletter provider identified at the point of collection.
- Subscription is optional and separate from contacting Sociology Daily.
- Every marketing email should include an unsubscribe mechanism.
- Unsubscribing may leave a minimal suppression record so the address is not re-added accidentally.
- Newsletter information is not used for unrelated purposes without an appropriate basis.
Cookies, local storage and similar technologies
Cookies are small text records placed on a device. Local storage is a browser feature that can remember a preference without sending that value with every request. Sociology Daily uses or may use the following:
| Technology | Purpose | Typical duration |
|---|---|---|
sd_viewed_[article ID] |
Prevents the same browser session from repeatedly increasing an article’s view count. The value does not contain your name or email. | Approximately 30 minutes. |
sdTheme local storage |
Remembers whether you selected light or dark reading mode. | Until you change it or clear browser storage. |
| WordPress login cookies | Authenticate administrators, editors or registered users where account access is enabled. | Session-based or as selected at login. |
| WordPress comment cookies | May remember a commenter’s name, email and website for convenience if comments are enabled and the visitor opts in. | Set by WordPress according to the comment configuration. |
| LiteSpeed, security or hosting cookies | Support caching, request routing, performance, fraud prevention and website security. | Session-based or according to the relevant service configuration. |
You can control cookies and local storage through your browser. Blocking essential technologies may affect login, caching, security or preferences. Where non-essential analytics or advertising cookies are introduced and consent is legally required, they should not be activated before the required choice.
Measurement, fonts and embedded content
Basic readership measurement
Sociology Daily uses first-party article-view counts and server information to understand broad readership. These measurements are intended for editorial and operational decisions, not for creating profiles for targeted advertising.
Google Fonts
The current theme may request the Newsreader, Source Sans 3 and IBM Plex Mono font files from Google Fonts domains. When your browser requests those resources, Google receives standard connection information such as the requesting IP address, browser details and the requested resource. Google handles that information under its own terms and privacy documentation. Sociology Daily may later self-host fonts to reduce third-party requests.
Embedded content and external links
Articles may link to or embed material from universities, journals, video hosts, social networks or other third parties. Embedded content can behave as though you visited the third-party website directly and may collect data, use cookies or track interaction according to its own policies. A link does not mean Sociology Daily controls or endorses the third party’s privacy practices.
When information is shared
We do not sell or rent personal information. We disclose information only when reasonably necessary for the purposes described in this policy, including to:
- Hostinger and infrastructure providers for hosting, backups, caching, security and technical support;
- email and mail-delivery providers to deliver contact-form messages and replies;
- newsletter providers if you deliberately subscribe through an enabled signup form;
- WordPress service, theme and plugin providers where a feature makes a necessary external request;
- professional advisers and contractors who need information to support Sociology Daily and are expected to protect it;
- authorities, courts or affected parties when disclosure is lawfully required or reasonably necessary to protect rights, safety, security or the public; and
- a successor operator if the publication is reorganised, transferred or merged, subject to appropriate confidentiality and notice.
International processing
Hosting, email, font, security and newsletter providers may process information in countries other than your own. Where applicable law requires safeguards for international transfers, we will use an available lawful mechanism and take reasonable steps to ensure appropriate protection.
How long we retain information
We keep personal information only for as long as reasonably needed for the relevant purpose, including legal, accounting, editorial, security and dispute requirements. Typical principles are:
- Contact enquiries: normally no longer than 24 months after the last meaningful correspondence, unless a longer period is justified.
- Editorial and contributor records: for the duration of the editorial relationship and a reasonable archival or rights-management period.
- Newsletter records: until you unsubscribe, followed by a limited suppression record where necessary.
- Comments: for as long as the related content remains published, unless removed earlier.
- Security and server logs: according to operational and hosting retention schedules, then deleted or overwritten.
- Backups: until they are overwritten through the normal backup cycle.
Information may be retained longer when required to establish, exercise or defend legal claims; comply with law; investigate misuse; or protect the website and its users.
Security
We use reasonable administrative and technical measures appropriate to the nature of the website and information, which may include HTTPS encryption in transit, access controls, software updates, least-privilege administration, spam and abuse controls, caching, security logging and backups.
No website, email system or storage method is completely secure. You should avoid sending highly sensitive information through an ordinary contact form. If we become aware of a breach requiring notice, we will take steps consistent with applicable law.
Your privacy rights
Depending on your location and the law that applies, you may have rights to:
- request confirmation of whether we process your personal information;
- request access to or a copy of eligible information;
- ask us to correct inaccurate or incomplete information;
- ask us to delete information, subject to lawful exceptions;
- ask us to restrict certain processing;
- object to processing based on legitimate interests or direct marketing;
- request eligible information in a portable format;
- withdraw consent where processing relies on consent; and
- complain to an applicable privacy or data-protection authority.
California residents
Where the California Consumer Privacy Act applies to Sociology Daily, eligible California residents may have rights to know, access, correct and delete personal information; opt out of covered sale or sharing; limit certain uses of sensitive information; and receive non-discriminatory treatment for exercising those rights. Sociology Daily does not sell personal information and does not share it for cross-context behavioural advertising.
Exercising a right
Send a request to contact@sociologydaily.com with “Privacy Request” in the subject. Describe the request and the interaction through which you provided information. We may request proportionate information to verify identity and authority. We will respond within the period required by applicable law.
Some requests may be limited where information is needed for security, legal obligations, freedom of expression, public-interest journalism, record integrity, legal claims or another lawful exception.
Children and younger readers
Sociology Daily provides general educational and editorial content that may be read by students. The website is not designed to knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 without appropriate involvement of a parent or guardian. If the law in a visitor’s location sets a higher age for valid consent to a particular activity, that requirement applies.
A parent or guardian who believes a child submitted personal information improperly may contact us to request review and appropriate deletion.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when website features, providers, editorial practices or legal requirements change. The revised page will show an updated date. If a change materially affects how previously collected information is used, we will provide additional notice or seek consent when required.
